CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The University of Arkansas men’s tennis team had a strong showing against some of the nation’s best at the Virginia One Plus One on Friday, splitting two singles matches and two doubles matches. Senior Christopher Nott advanced to the second round of his singles flight while the doubles team of Nott and senior Matthew Hogan bounced back from the opening doubles match loss to win their first match of consolation.
“It was good to have these seniors out on the courts today,” said head coach Robert Cox. “It was good to have them play high, quality tennis and they proved to themselves that they belong against top competition.”
In singles action, the 41st ranked Nott was in the A-2 flight. His first matchup pitted him against Ivan Sanchez of North Carolina State. After winning the first set, 6-4, Nott dropped set number two to the unranked Sanchez, 2-6, before bouncing back to win the third set, 6-4. With the win, Nott will now move on to round two to face Jorge Varon of East Tennessee State. That match will be played at 11:30 a.m.
Hogan had a slightly different day in singles as he matched up against 45th ranked Reid Carleton of Duke. Hogan lost the match in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. However, Hogan’s singles play for the weekend will not end there as he now moves to the consolation side of the bracket and will face Santiago Villegas of Virginia on Saturday at 9 a.m.
Over in doubles, the 37th ranked team of Nott and Hogan entered the A-4 Doubles flight as the top ranked team in the flight. They lived up to their ranking in their first match, winning 8-5 over Alex Raifee and William Parker of North Carolina.
A much tougher test came in the semi-final round of the doubles flight as Nott and Hogan had to face the team of Sanam Singh and Steven Eelkman Rooda from Virginia. The match ended up going into a tiebreaker after being tied up at eight. Unfortunately, the Hogs fell just short, losing 9-8 (5), sending them to the third place match against Jon Jaklitsch and Evan Berstein of Cornell. That match will be played on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
Both players will be in singles and doubles action tomorrow with the final round of doubles slated for 7:30 a.m. and the possibility of two rounds of singles to follow. All matches will be played at the Snyder Tennis Center on the University of Virginia campus.
