Trio of Lady'Backs advance at the North and South

FAYETTEVILLE — University of Arkansas golfers Stacy Lewis, Alex Schulte and Lucy Nunn all advanced to second round match play action at the 105th North and South Women’s Amateur Championship in Pinehurst, N.C., Wednesday. The trio all advanced to the round of 32 in match play beginning Thursday morning at the par-71 on the No. 2 and No. 8 courses at Pinehurst. Lewis was Arkansas’ highest individual qualifier in stroke play finishing the opening days play with a 147, but The Woodlands, Texas, native had her hands full Wednesday. Lewis won in 19 holes to edge Megan McChrystal of Stuart, Fla. McChrystal qualified 53rd in the tournament field. Schulte qualified in the No. 28 spot with a 151 through the first two days of stroke play. She won 1-up over Pelham Manor, N.Y.’s Nannette Hill in the morning round. Lewis faces Ann Laney of Charlotte, N.C., while Schulte takes on Maite Ortiz de Pinedo of Buies Creek, N.C. Should both Lady’Backs win their matches, they will meet in the quarterfinal Friday. Nunn carded a two-round 152 and qualified in the 38th spot overall. She upset No. 27 Heather Scholten of Grand Rapids, Mich, 2 and 1. Nunn faces sixth-seed Calle Nielson of Nashville, Tenn., in the first of two matches on Thursday. Match play continues through the weekend with the winner crowned Sunday.
