Tubert ends run

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -University of Arkansas freshman-to-be Emily Tubert was eliminated in the round of 32 Thursday at the 110th U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship in Charlotte, N.C.

Tubert, a Burbank, Calif., native, fell to Sara-Maude Juneau of Canada, 6 & 4. Tubert trailed from the opening hole and never recovered.

The future Razorback posted a 148 in the two-round stroke play portion of the event Monday and Tuesday. She opened with a 76 followed by a 72 in the second round on the par-72, 6,559-yard Charlotte Country Club course.

Tubert moved into the round of 64 and as the No. 41 seed facing No. 24 seed Beverly Mendoza of the Philippines. Mendoza carded a 146 in the qualifying rounds.

Tubert controlled the match from the first hole going 1-up with a birdie on the par four. Mendoza squared the match on the second hole and it would remain even through six holes.

Tubert won the seventh hole with a birdie and went on to win the next two taking a 3-up lead into the turn. Although Mendoza rallied to win 10 and 14, Tubert never trailed before the 3-up win in 16 holes.

The 2010 U.S. Women’s Amateur will continue with the second and third-round matches on Thursday. The quarterfinal matches are on Friday, the semifinals are on Saturday and the 36-hole championship final will be played Sunday.
