Tubert, Razorbacks win at Oklahoma

NORMAN, Okla. — Freshman Emily Tubert paced the University of Arkansas to a final round surge and the title at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Course in Norman, Okla., Sunday.Tubert won the event firing a final-round 70 for a 211 (69-72-70) leading Arkansas to a 291 on Sunday — the lowest team round by 10 strokes.Senior Kelli Shean finished second shooting a one-over 73 in the final round. Shean shot 213 (69-71-73) as all five Razorbacks finished in the top 20.The Razorbacks trailed host Oklahoma by five strokes heading into the final round but rallied Sunday for the win.Tubert began the day on the 10th hole and played even through 13 where she birdied with par five. She finished the back side one-under. Tubert dropped another stroke after making the turn and counting a three on the par four first hole.Tubert gave a stroke back on the fourth hole with a five but again fell to two-under with a birdied on the final hole of her round.Shean also started her day on the 10th and seemed to struggle a bit on the back nine playing three over. She rallied, however, on the front nine getting two strokes back. Shean birdied three and nine to finish one-over.“I couldn’t be more proud of what we did this weekend,” Arkansas head coach Shauna Estes-Taylor said. “Four of the five players birdied their last hole. It was a challenge today with 20-30 mile-an-hour winds when we finished but talk about finishing strong. It was awesome.“Emily is not afraid to win, in fact she thrives under that kind of pressure,” Estes-Taylor continued. “She is a special player and she’s going to be fun to watch. Kelli didn’t have her best stuff today but she was so clutch coming in. That’s what you want from your seniors.”Sophomore Victoria Vela bounced up-and-down the leaderboard for the weekend finishing tied for 12th overall. Vela shot 225 (76-75-74) recording her best finish as a Razorback.Senior Corinna Rees also posted her best finish with a tie for 14th overall. Rees finished two-over with a 74 for 226 (76-76-74). Redshirt freshman Emma Lavy, playing in her first collegiate event, tied for 18th overall with a 228 (79-72-77). The Fayetteville, Ark., native, carded an even-par 72 in the second round for her career-best.Sophomore Meagan Roberts, competing as an individual, tied for 24th overall with a 232 (77-75-80).“This is a really special group,” Estes-Taylor said. “They have great chemistry and we have a team work ethic that I haven’t seen in a long time. They want it. They want to win and they expect to win. It was great to see them reap the benefits of all their hard work.”Arkansas won the event with an 871 (290-290-291). Oklahoma was second with 876 (287-288-301), followed by Tulsa in third with 894 (290-302-302). Ole Miss was fourth with 895 (297-294-304), Texas State moved up a spot to fifth with 916 (312-300-304). Middle Tennessee State finished sixth with 921 (309-301-311) and the rest of the field included Redlands Community College in seventh with 937 (312-312-313) and Oklahoma City rounded out the teams in eighth place with 963 (318-323-322).The Razorbacks travel to Knoxville, Tenn., for the Mercedes Benz Collegiate Classic, Oct. 8-10.
