Two More Games, Two More Wins

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Arkansas softball team improved to 16-1 with a pair of wins Saturday on day two of the Wooo Pig Classic. After registering 11 hits in a 7-2 win over IUPUI, the Razorbacks posted a season-high 16 hits on their way to a 9-2 victory over Lamar. In its weekend finale, Arkansas will close out the home-opening tournament Sunday with a second game against IUPUI. First pitch is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. (CT).

Game 1: Arkansas 7, IUPUI 2 | Box Score

For the ninth time this season, the Razorbacks scored in the first inning. With the bases loaded after three-consecutive hits to start the frame, sophomore Ashley Diaz dropped a perfectly placed single up the middle in between second and short to plate senior lead-off hitter Stephanie Canfield. After IUPUI pulled even with a run in the top of the second, Arkansas regained the lead with three runs in the home half of the inning.

Making her ninth start, freshman Autumn Storms picked up her sixth win with five innings of work in which she allowed two runs—one earned—on seven hits and struck out three Jaguar hitters. The Temecula, California, native did not walk anyone for the sixth time in 10 appearances this season. Allison Stewart pitched the last two innings, entering the game with a 5-2 lead, to earn the save.

Game 2: Arkansas 9, Lamar 4 | Box Score

Trailing 3-1 entering the bottom of the fourth inning, the Razorbacks’ bats came to life with a six-run outburst highlighted by a bases-clearing triple by Cooper. The junior outfielder drove a 0-1 offering through the infield and to the wall in right center and came home to score on an RBI single by Diaz in the next at-bat. Arkansas scored six runs on five hits in the inning to take a 7-3 lead on the scoreboard. Nicole Schroeder stretched the advantage to 9-3 with a two-run double in the fifth.

On in relief of starter Grace Moll, sophomore transfer Katie Warrick entered the game with one down in the third inning. She responded by retiring 11 of the next 12 hitter she faced. In the seventh, Lamar scored and threatened to add more by loading the bases with two outs but Warrick responded with her fourth strikeout of the game to seal the win.
