Tyson Gay Wins 100M on Day Three of U.S. Olympic Trials

EUGENE, Ore. – Former member of the Arkansas Razorback track and field team, Tyson Gay, won the 100 meters on day three of the U.S. Olympic Trials at Oregon’s Hayward Field on Sunday.

Gay clocked a wind-aided (4.1 m/s) 9.68, the fastest time ever run in the 100 meters in any conditions. He also punched his ticket to the Beijing Olympics. In Saturday’s quarterfinals, Gay set a new American record with his wind-legal time of 9.77.

In the 100-meter semifinals Sunday afternoon, there was good news and bad news for Gay and former teammate Wallace Spearmon. Gay easily won his heat with a time of 9.85 to advance to the finals. Spearmon finished fifth in his heat, with a time of 10.18, and was the first runner in his heat to be left out of the final.

Spearmon and Gay will return to the track Friday, July 4, for the qualifying rounds of the 200 meters.
