KINGSTON, Tenn. – After an upset win in the semifinals, Arkansas’ Magnus Kullenberg and Tiago Azevedo fell in the doubles final of the Citizens Bank Clay Court Championship on Sunday. Azevedo and Kullenberg reached the semifinals with an 8-6 win over host East Tennessee State University’s third-seeded duo of Carey and Orr in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Azevedo and Kullenberg defeated Virginia Tech’s Bruner and Duplijak, 8-5, for a trip to the finals. Arkansas’ tandem was defeated in the finals by the top-seeded and 24th-ranked team of Crews and Handoyo, 8-4.
“It was great for those two (Kullenberg and Azevedo) to make it to the finals because neither of them are considered doubles players,” UA head coach Robert Cox said. “I am very proud of our guys and what they accomplished this weekend.” Kullenberg also reached the quarterfinals of the singles draw before being defeated by Mississippi State’s Romain Amberg, 6-2, 6-2, on Saturday. Arkansas will return to Fayetteville to host the RazorRacket Invitational Sept. 15-17. Among the teams that will compete in the event are Tulsa, Minnesota, Kilgore, Oral Roberts and Southwest Missouri State. But the Razorbacks will be without the services of their top players. Oskar Johansson and Oggie Kolev have accepted an invitation to the River Oaks Invitational in Houston, Texas. “It is a great honor for our guys to be invited to play in such a prestigious tournament. It will be a great experience for both of them,” Cox said.
