UA Tennis Opens Weekend with Nebraska
BY ANDRES FOCIL
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Coming off an exhibition win, the Arkansas Razorbacks will take on their first competition of the spring dual season when the Nebraska Cornhuskers (0-1) roll into town on Friday. The Big XII foe is tough competition for the Razorbacks this early in the season and Arkansas head coach Robert Cox is looking forward to Friday’s 5 p.m. match.
“Nebraska is coming in here after playing a tough Rice team,” Cox said. “Even though they lost, 6-1, we know that Rice is a strong team with three players in the top 50. We have to respect that result, because for the Cornhuskers to go down and do what they did at Rice is eye catching.”
Nebraska is the first of two Big XII teams the Razorbacks will take on this season as they face Texas in April. Nebraska comes in as an experienced team, bringing two seniors, three juniors, two sophomores and two freshmen. Nebraska’s first match of the season ended in a 6-1 loss to the No. 36 Rice Owls on Jan. 20. Last year the Huskers finished with a 10-12 overall record and a 2-5 mark in the Big XII.
“We’re really excited about the beginning of our season,” Cox said. “We’re ready to see what we’re made of as we open against two solid teams in Nebraska and Northwestern on Sunday. We are hitting the ball well right now and everyone is healthy. We’re going to improve and find out a lot about ourselves.
“Nebraska is a very solid tennis program and it has been a while since we have opened against quality opponents. We’re ready to get our freshmen initiated in collegiate tennis in very good fashion.”
The action kicks off Friday evening at 5 p.m. at the newly renovated Dills Indoor Tennis Complex with a scheduled appearance by the Arkansas Pom squad.
