Edinburg, Texas – Texas-Pan America put up five runs in the fourth inning to blow open a one-run game and cruise to an 11-4 victory over the Arkansas Razorbacks Sunday.Arkansas dropped to 11-5 with the loss, while UTPA improved to 9-10.
Clint Brannon (0-1) took the loss despite not giving up an earned run. Brannon pitched three innings allowing four unearned runs on three hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
Tommy Sorden (2-1) earned the win after holding the Razorbacks to four runs, three earned, on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
Sorden retired 13 consecutive hitters during one stretch in earning the complete-game win.
Arkansas got on the scoreboard in the first when Blake Parker singled home Casey Rowlett from second base. Rowlett reached on a fielder’s choice and then stole second to get into scoring position.
The Broncs tied the game in the bottom of the first. Louie Alamia singled and advanced on a single by T.J. Gilmer. Alamia moved to third on the play when Jake Dugger bobbled the ball as he was fielding it in right.
Marco Garza then singled home Alamia to even the score at 1-1. A passed ball moved the runners to second and third with no outs.
With two outs, Matt Sisk hit a ground ball that went under Devin Day’s glove at short allowing two more runs to score and give the Broncs a 3-1 lead.
The Razorbacks took advantage of an error to get a run in the second inning. Haas Pratt singled up the middle to score Brett Hagedorn from third, who reached on a throwing error by the Broncs third baseman.
Arkansas’ fourth error of the day gave the Broncs a run in the bottom of the third inning. Garza reached on a fielding error by Hagedorn and advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt by Brannon.
Juan Saenz grounded out to short to plate Garza from third and push the lead to 4-2.
Bubbs Merrill made it a 4-3 game in the fourth with a sacrifice fly to left that plated Parker. Parker doubled to leadoff the inning and moved to third on a single by Hagedorn.
Texas-Pan American took a 7-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth when Gilmer blasted a two-out, three-run home run over the left field wall off reliever Jay Sawatski.
Still in the fourth, the Broncs increased their lead on Saenz’s RBI single through the right side that plated Garza from third. The run pushed the UTPA lead to 8-3. Tony Ortiz made it a 9-3 game with a double to left that plated Saenz.
A one-out double by Alamai in the seventh scored two runs and gave the Broncs an 11-3 lead.
Merrill made it an 11-4 game in the ninth with a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded. Sorden issued two walks and gave up a single in allowing the run to score.
The Razorbacks return to action next weekend when they host Illinois-Chicago in a three-game series at Baum Stadium.
Game one of the series is slated for 3:05 p.m. Friday, March 12.
