FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The seventh-ranked University of Arkansas women’s golf team takes part in a new event this week playing in the 2015 PING/ASU Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. It is the final regular season event for the Razorbacks.
The talent-laden field is nothing new for Arkansas as the Razorbacks have played in several events with top-10 teams. This week, they face No 1 Southern California, No. 2 Washington, No. 3 UCLA, No. 4 South Carolina, No. 5 Duke and No. 8 Arizona all out of the top 10.
The Razorbacks are in the midst of a great season on the links. They have six top five finishes, including two team titles, in seven events. Junior Gabriela Lopez paces the team with a 71.89 stroke average this season. She has two top five finishes on the season.
Regina Plasenia is second on the team with a 72.63 average and is coming off her first collegiate individual win last week at the Liz Murphey Intercollegiate. Transfer Samantha Marks is third on the team with a 73.16 average followed by Summar Roachell at 73.53. Freshman Alan Uriell rounds out the traveling five. Uriell checks in with a75.83 averaging in two events as a freshman.
The Razorbacks follow up with a trip to the Southeastern Conference Championship in Birmingham, Ala., April 17-19, followed by NCAA Regionals and the NCAA Championship.
I’m excited about this event. It is a different venue for us. We played NCAA Regionals there a couple of years ago and this will be a great test of golf. It is a desert golf course so visually it will be a little different for the team but I always tell them it is great to prepare on different golf courses with different styles. Different courses give us a competitive advantage down the road.
