SAN ANTONIO, Texas – A solid opening round has the University of Arkansas women’s golf team on top of the leaderboard tied for first at the Alamo Invitational in San Antonio, Texas, Sunday.
The @RazorbackWGolf team posted a 13-under 275 and share the lead with Auburn after one round. Arkansas made a big push in the second half of the round with 11 birdies on the back side of the Briggs Ranch Golf Course.
Sophomore transfer Samantha Marks leads Arkansas and is tied for fourth overall. Marks turned even but rattled off four consecutive birdies on 10, 11, 12 and 13. She added another birdie on the 16th hole and finished four-under 68.
Junior Gabriela Lopez is tied for fourth with Marks shooting a 68. Lopez turned three-under and finished the back side with three birdies and two bogeys.
Sophomore Summar Roachell shot69 and is tied for eighth, junior Regina Plasenica carded a two-under 70 and is tied for 13th and sophomore Kayli Quinton finished one-over with a 73 and is tied for 33rd overall.
It was a great team effort today,” Arkansas head coach Shauna Estes-Taylor said. “This is a tough course and conditions were tough today. Despite that, Samantha played really well. To come out and birdie four in a row on the back nine is just really good. Gaby and Summar were really consistent all day and I’m really proud of Kayli. It is her first start of her season, second of her career, and to shoot one-over just shows how much she has learned and grown as a player.”
“We are in a good position, obviously, and I’m looking forward to coming out over the next two days and see where we can finish,” said Estes-Taylor.
@RazorbackWGolf has two more rounds in the final event of the fall season.
