Washington named pre-season All-SEC

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. –- Forward Michael Washington has been named to the Southeastern Conference’s pre-season all-conference team selected by the league’s coaches, the conference announced on Monday.

Washington, a 6-9, 239-pound junior from McGehee, Ark., averaged 4.3 points and 3.9 rebounds as a sophomore, and 3.5 points and 1.6 rebounds as a freshman.

Last year, he played just more than 13 minutes a game, sharing time with seniors Steven Hill, Darian Townes, Charles Thomas and Vincent Hunter. Even in limited time, he still claimed 62 offensive rebounds, which was second on the team only to Townes, who had 77.

He started nine times last year and had highs of 16 points once and 12 rebounds twice.

Washington is on the pre-season second team along with Alabama’s Alonzo Gee and Ronald Steele, Auburn’s Korvotney Barber, Tennessee’s Wayne Chism and J.P. Prince, Georgia’s Terrance Woodbury, LSU’s Chris Johnson, Kentucky’s Jodie Meeks and South Carolina’s Dominque Archie.

The first team consists of Florida’s Nick Calathes, LSU’s Tasmin Mitchell and Marcus Thornton, Kentucky’s Patrick Patterson, Ole Miss’ Chris Warren, Mississippi State’s Jarvis Varnado, South Carolina’s Devan Downey, Tennessee’s Tyler Smith and Vanderbilt’s A.J. Ogilvy.

The SEC selects an eight-player first and second team, and ties are not broken.
