Weems Traded to Denver After Drafted by Chicago

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – After being drafted by the Chicago Bulls on Thursday, former Arkansas guard/forward Sonny Weems is now headed to Denver.

The Bulls took the first-team All-SEC selection with the ninth pick of the second round and the No. 39 overall selection in Thursday’s NBA Draft.

Denver has acquired the rights to Weems from Chicago in a three-team trade.

The Portland Trail Blazers received the Nuggets’ 2009 second round pick, New York’s 2009 second round pick (via Chicago) and Chicago’s 2010 second round pick. Additionally, the Bulls picked up the draft rights to the 36th overall pick, Omer Asik of Turkey, from Portland.

Weems completed his Razorback career by earning first-team All-Southeastern Conference honors, and all-district honors from the National Association of Basketball Coaches and the United States Basketball Writers Association in his senior season.

He averaged 15.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.6 assists, helping the Razorbacks go 23-12, finish second in the Southeastern Conference’s Western Division, reach the finals of the SEC Tournament and advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. He scored 31 points in the NCAA Tournament first-round victory over No. 24 Indiana.

He averaged 11.8 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists as a junior, and was named to the SEC and Old Spice Classic all-tournament teams.

In his two years, he averaged 13.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.5 steals while shooting 42 percent from the field and 73 percent at the line, helping the Hogs go a combined 44-26 with two bids to the NCAA Tournament.

Following the completion of his Razorback career, Weems won the collegiate slam dunk national title in the 20th annual State Farm College Slam Dunk and 3-Point Championships at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas. He became the second Razorback (Brandon Dean) to win the contest held in conjunction with the Final Four.

Weems is the third Razorback to be drafted in the last eight years. Joe Johnson was the 10th selection in the first round by Boston in 2001 and Ronnie Brewer the 14th selection in the first round by Utah in 2006.

Overall, 37 Razorbacks have selected in the NBA Draft.
