Wernes Selected by Astros in MLB Draft

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Junior infielder Bobby Wernes was selected by the Houston Astros in the 30th round with the 889th overall pick on Wednesday afternoon. He becomes the third Razorback chosen in the 2015 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

Wernes, known for highlight defensive plays at third base, has broken out at the plate in 2015, hitting .280 with seven double, six triples and five home runs to help lead Arkansas back to the College World Series.

Named to the All-SEC Defensive team at third base, Wernes has made two appearances on SportsCenter’s #SCTop10 this season, including the No. 1 play on March 18 with his jump throw in foul territory.

The Overland Park, Kansas native has had a knack for coming up big late in games, highlighted by his ninth-inning game-winning home run to send Arkansas past Florida in the second round of the SEC Tournament.

The junior has five hits during the 2015 NCAA Tournament, including six runs scored to rank second on the team. His current four-game hitting streak is tops on the team, while his six triples on the year is the most by any Arkansas player since the 2002 season.

Wernes will make his first trip to the College World Series this weekend when Arkansas travels to Omaha for the eighth time in program history to play Virginia in the opening game Saturday at TD Ameritrade Park.
