Williams honored again

FAYETTEVILLE – University of Arkansas tight end D.J. Williams has been named the Mackey Tight End of the Week by the Nassau County Sports Commission, the same group that Monday named him one of eight semifinalists for the Mackey Award.

Williams caught five passes for 58 yards, including a single-game career-high-tying two touchdowns, in the Razorbacks’ 58-21 victory over UTEP last Saturday. He also moved into third place on UA’s career receptions chart with 140, which leads all active NCAA tight ends. He now has 1,719 career receiving yards, a total that also leads all active tight ends and ranks 10th on UA’s career list.

The John Mackey Tight End of the Week is an honor distinct and different from the annual John Mackey Award. This weekly honor was started in 2004 to draw attention to individual play by tight ends during the active season.

The John Mackey Award, established in 2001, is awarded annually to the most outstanding tight end in FBS college football. In addition to demonstrating outstanding athletic prowess on the field, the award also stands for positive sportsmanship-like behavior, good academic standing & exceptional leadership abilities.

The 2010 Mackey Award winner will be presented live on ESPNU at the Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet show between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. ET on Dec. 9, 2010, in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
