PHILADELPHIA – University of Arkansas defensive lineman Deatrich Wise Jr. was selected in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft when he was taken with the 131st overall pick by the New England Patriots on Saturday.

Wise is the first draft selection for Arkansas in 2017 and becomes the 29th Arkansas defensive lineman to ever be drafted, including the fourth in the Bret Bielema era. He is the second Arkansas defensive lineman drafted by the Patriots in the past three years, joining Super Bowl LI champion Trey Flowers, who was a fourth-round pick in 2015.

Over Bielema’s 11 seasons as a head coach, his career total of NFL Draft picks now stands at 40, including 15 at Arkansas. Bielema has had 12 defensive lineman drafted in his head coaching career.

Wise played in 50 games with 10 starts and totaled 112 tackles, including 23.0 for loss, 17 quarterback hurries, six pass breakups, and four forced fumbles. He led the Southeastern Conference with 8.0 sacks during conference play in 2015 and went on to close out his career ranked 10th on Arkansas’ career sacks list with 16.5. Out of his 16.5 career sacks, 11.5 came against conference opponents.

A team captain as a senior in 2016, Wise started eight of 13 games played and finished with 49 stops, 5.5 for loss, and 3.5 sacks for the season. He also produced a team-high seven quarterback hurries and forced one fumble.

The Carrollton, Texas, product turned in a big performance in the East-West Shrine Game in January. Wise recorded a game-high eight tackles, including 1.5 sacks and another tackle for loss, as well as four quarterback hurries and a forced fumble.

Wise’s father, Deatrich Wise Sr., was a ninth-round selection in the 1988 NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks.
