FAYETTEVILLE – The University of Arkansas women’s basketball team continues its series of opponent previews as it counts down to tipoff of the 2013-14 season. Next up on the nonconference schedule for the Razorbacks is the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles.
Opponent: Oral Roberts Golden Eagles
Date: Nov. 13, 7 p.m.
Location: Bud Walton Arena, Fayetteville
Series results: This marks the 24th meeting between Oral Roberts and Arkansas. The last contest between the two programs took place during the 2011-12 season, as the Razorbacks earned a 65-37 win.
Last season: Under first year head coach Misti Cussen, Oral Roberts finished 16-12 overall and earned a share of the Southland Conference regular season championship by going 13-5 in league play. The Golden Eagles also went on to defeat Sam Houston State in the SLC championship game and claim the program’s first-ever SLC tournament title. The team’s season came to an end in the first round of the 2013 NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship with an 83-62 loss to Tennessee.
Foe to Know: Sarah Shelton, 6-3 Center, RS Senior. The Golden Eagles’ top returning scorer from last season (8.8 ppg), Shelton alsoled the team in field-goal percentage (.655), rebounding (5.6 rpg) and added a defensive presence with 1.1 blocks per game.
Building On Success: It was an impressive first season for Oral Roberts under the direction of new head coach Misti Cussen. In justher first season, Cussen guided the program to the top of the Southland Conference and captured both regular season and tournament titles in the team’s first campaign as league members. Along the way, Cussen led the Golden Eagles through a brutal opening stretch in her first season as head coach, including a non-conference schedule that one publication ranked as the 13th-toughest in the nation.
