Women’s Basketball Opponent Preview: Southeast Missouri

FAYETTEVILLE – The University of Arkansas women’s basketball team continues its series of opponent previews as it counts down to tipoff of the 2013-14 season. Next up on the nonconference schedule for the Razorbacks is the team’s first tournament of the season, the New Mexico Tournament,held in Albuquerque, N.M.

Opponent: Southeast Missouri Redhawks (First Round)

Date: Nov. 29,6 p.m.

Location: The Pit, Albuquerque, N.M.

Series Results: This marks the first meeting between Southeast Missouri and Arkansas. The Redhawksbecame officialNCAA Division I membersduring the1991-92 season.

Last Season: Southeast Missouri finished 11-18 overall last season, going 5-11 and finishing tied for ninth in the Ohio Valley Conference standings. It marked the most wins since the 2008-09 season for the Redhawks. The team missed out on the OVC tournament, but also recorded its highest conference finish since the ’08-09 campaign.

Foe to Know: Kara Wright, 5-11, Guard, Sophomore. As just a freshman, averaged 8.5 points per game, led the Redhawks in field goal percentage (.455) and finished third on the team with 247 total points. She elevated her game in conference play, finishing second on the team with 10.6 points per game. The performance earned her a spot on the OVC All-Newcomer Team, the first Southeast Missouri player to earn postseason honors from the conference since Tarina Nixon was a second-team All-OVC pick in 2009.

Favorable Returns: Despite graduating three players that started 15 or more games, Southeast boasts seven returning letterwinners, five of whom started at one point last year. Four of those players started at least 10 games while.
