FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The University of Arkansas women’s golf team begins the 2011-12 season ranked 10th in the nation in the Golf World/NGCA Preseason Coaches’ Poll it was announced today. The Razorbacks are coming off a program-best tie for fifth place at last year’s NCAA Championship and return a solid corps of players for the upcoming season. “It is always great to be selected in the coaches’ poll,” head coach Shauna Estes-Taylor said. “It is a testament not only of the success of last year’s team but of all the teams who have come before it. I’m proud of last year’s accomplishments but we are a new team now and we are ready to move forward and be the best we can be this year. “I look at is as a starting point,” Estes-Taylor added. “The important poll is the last one of the year.” The Razorbacks welcome back All-American and the Southeastern Conference’s Co-Freshman of the Year in Emily Tubert along with sophomore Emma Lavy who earned selection on the league’s all-freshman team last season. They, along with junior Victoria Vela who competed in every event last year, anchor what should be a competitive team for Arkansas. Junior Meagan Roberts returns for her third season with Estes-Taylor and the Razorbacks as does redshirt sophomore Rachel Carpenter. Arkansas picks up the services of transfer Emily Podzielinski and those of freshman Hally Leadbetter and Audrey Monssoh for the 2011-12 campaign. UCLA captured the top spot in the poll earning 22 of the 32 possible first-place votes. The Bruins return four of the five players that led them to the national title last year. The rest of the top five include No. 2 Southern California, Alabama, LSU and Virginia. The SEC was well-represented with eight programs ranked in the poll leading all onferences. The Pac-12 was second with six selections followed by the ACC with four teams in the top 25. Estes-Taylor and the Razorbacks take part in a qualifying round Monday, Sept. 5, at the Walmart NW Arkansas LPGA Championship at Pinnacle Country Club in Rogers, Ark., where Vela and Lavy attempt to make the cut for the weekend. Tubert received a sponsor’s exemption and begins play Friday along with former Razorback Stacy Lewis. Golf World/NGCA Coaches’ Poll Pre-Season Poll | Sept. 5 Issue NCAA Women’s Division I
