Young attends LeBron and Williams camps

It has been a busy offseason for Arkansas’ BJ Young as the sophomore guard spent his time learning the tricks of the trade from some of the NBA’s greatest players and coaches as he attended two elite camps hosted by LeBron James and Deron Williams. “Those were both great camps and great experiences,” Young said. “I got to be around some great players, play with some great players and I got to be around some great coaches and take some good advice from NBA coaches, retired NBA coaches and NBA players. I got a lot of knowledge and a lot of experience “ Young was selected along with just a handful of other talented collegiate players to participate in the camps. “It’s helped me. By playing with some of the best players in the nation, I can come back and use some of the stuff I learned at the camps [to teach] my teammates, then we can all become better as a team,” he said. “I think being around players that are just as good as me humbled me a lot and it showed me that I have a lot of work to do, and I can always improve my game.” And improve he did. Young saw immediate improvements with his ball handling and foot work. Both camps honed in on the same skills and that really helped players drill in the concepts. He explained that the most valuable piece of information he took away was about controlling the pace of play. “The pace of the game was probably the most important thing [I learned],” he said. “I want to play at my pace. I want to have the game the speed I want it at. I want to be the one to change the speed.” Learning to have patience on the court is something Young has been trying to lock down this offseason with the help of the Arkansas coaching staff. However, its promising the tips will stick this time around after hearing the same messages at the camp of the NBA’s reigning Most Valuable Player. For Young, the camps also served as a great motivation moving toward the upcoming season and his basketball career. “It just motivated me a lot more to see where I’m at now, see where I can be and where I want to get to,” he said. “Also, [it motivated me] to come out this season and take my team as far as possible and win as many games. [I want to] see how far we can go this year as a team and just have the best season I can possibly have to help my team.”
