FAYETTEVILLE – The University of Arkansas softball team (4-0) swept a doubleheader versus Butler Community College, by scores of 7-0 and 2-1, Wednesday at Bogle Park.
Arkansas was led by excellent pitching performances in both games. Starting in the circle for the Razorbacks in game one was freshman Kelly Young. She started her third game of the season and collected her second win after pitching seven scoreless innings. She would then come on in relief in game two to pick up her second win of the day and fourth of the fall season. The Mississippi Gatorade Player of the Year from Madison, Miss. went 10 scoreless innings on the day and struck out nine hitters while only allowing three hits. She has posted a 0.50 ERA through four games this fall. After the game, Young gave credit to her defense.
“I feel like I have gotten better every game,” Young said. “But, how can you not keep getting better when you are with this team and these coaches? (Clarisa) Navarro saved me on a couple plays. If I make a mistake, she has my back. That’s how I feel with all of the girls out here.”
Game two’s starter was 2012 SEC All-Freshman team member Kimmy Beasley. She allowed one run on three hits; this was the first run and first hits given up by Beasley in the 2012 fall season. She struck out four batters in her four innings pitched. Head coach Mike Larabee was impressed with the pitching on Wednesday.
“I am so proud of Kelly Young.” Larabee said. “It all starts with her work, she has been working hard and it has carried over to the games this fall. Kimmy Beasley threw alright today too; she had some soreness so we had to take her out. Kelly came in and did a nice job.”
Offensively, the Razorbacks started their day with Danielle Riddle breaking a scoreless tie in the second inning in game one. The freshman shot a double over the centerfielder’s head, scoring Amanda Geile on the play and making the score 1-0 Hogs.
The next inning, Devon Wallace added to the Razorback lead blasting a homerun into the right field grass on the first pitch of the third. This was her first homerun of the fall season.
The hitting would continue in the third inning, as Stephanie Canfield lined a single into right field and then scored on the next pitch when Clarisa Navarro hit a double into the left field wall. The double was Navarro’s third extra base hit of the fall season. Jayme Gee would add another double in the inning, this time with two outs. The double scored Amanda Geile and Clarisa Navarro making the score 5-0 at the end of the third.
Jennifer Rambo added to the lead in the fifth inning when she lined a single up the middle to score Amanda Geile. This was Geile’s third run scored in game one. Arkansas would make it 7-0 in the sixth inning when Devon Wallace collected her second RBI of the game on a single up the middle. The score would remain 7-0 as Arkansas took game one of the doubleheader.
Game two’s first score came at the hands of Butler Community College. The Grizzlies scored on a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth. However, the Razorbacks would fight back and add a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Danielle Riddle scored Claire Clark on a single to left field to make the score 1-1 after four innings of play.
Kelsey Berlin would hold the Razorbacks in check until the bottom of the seventh inning when Devon Wallace doubled off the left field wall. Two batters later, facing a 3-2 count, Navarro fought an inside fastball and tapped a roller to the shortstop. She beat the play out at first and advanced Wallace to third, opening the possibility for a sacrifice fly. Nicole Schroeder knew she had to hit a deep ball to the outfield and she hit a drive to right field. The ball was caught but it was deep enough to score Wallace as the Razorbacks held off the Grizzlies in seven.
Next up, the Razorbacks will hit the road for the only time this fall on Sunday, Oct. 7 for a doubleheader at Oklahoma State. Game one will begin at 3:00 p.m.
