Zguns Garners No. 8 Ranking; Arkansas Moves up

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – After stellar individual performances in league play, sophomore Adrians Zguns earned a top 10 national ranking as he moved up from No. 12 to No. 8 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Singles Rankings. Against Tennessee Zguns soundly defeated No. 94 Ockie Oosthuizen, 6-2, 6-0. Then in Sunday’s match against Georgia Zguns defeated Matias Ormaza, No. 44 in the nation, 6-4, 6-3. Zguns’ record currently stands at 25-5 and he has recorded victories over 11 ranked opponents.
Zguns is now the highest ranked player in the Southeastern Conference and he is also the highest ranked Razorback since Oskar Johansson received top billing in 2001. Georgia’s Bo Hodge is the closet in 12th.
In addition to Zguns improving his status, senior Nathan Price also helped his cause when he defeated then-ranked No. 4 Bo Hodge of Georgia. That victory pushed up Price more than 20 spots from No. 76 to No. 54. Price never let Hodge into the match winning, 6-3, 6-1, making Price’s record 24-7 on the year.
The Arkansas team was also able to benefit from the weekend’s quality team play and received a No. 23 ranking, moving up two spots from their previous standing. UA upset No. 21 Georgia, 4-3, putting the Hogs at 1-1 in conference competition on 9-2 for the season.
Seven SEC teams can be found in the top 25. Joining Arkansas is second-ranked Ole Miss, Florida (9), Vanderbilt (15), Kentucky (16), LSU (17) and Georgia (18).
This week Arkansas is in Honolulu, Hawaii as it prepares for its match against Hawaii on March 12 at 1 p.m. When the Hogs return they will travel to Nashville, Tenn., to take on Vanderbilt on March 19, at 2 p.m.
