LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Junior Nikolas Zogaj of the Razorback men’s tennis team had a big first day at the UNLV Invitational on Friday. The Belgian native won his first two singles matches of the tournament to advance to the semifinals. In his first match, he defeated Johannes Markel from UNLV, 6-3, 6-3. Soon after, he bested Scott Sears from Boise State in three sets, 2-6, 7-6, 6-4.
“Nikolas (Zogaj) really showed composure and poise in a come from behind victory against the guy from Boise State,” said head coach Robert Cox. “He (Zogaj) validates everything we try to teach here at Arkansas about keeping composure in a tough match.”
Zogaj also teamed up with freshman Michael Nott to advance to the quarterfinals of the doubles flight after defeating the UNLV team of Charlie Alvarado and Kyle Lynch.
Nott, also competed in singles, but, unfortunately, lost in the first round of flight two to Kasper Konyves of UNLV, 7-5, 6-2.
The next round of doubles will be played on Saturday at 11 a.m. (CST), followed by the semifinal round later in the day. Both doubles rounds will be broken up with one round of singles, which will decide who advances to the finals.
