This is the fourth feature in a series titled #13Days13Razorbacks in which one volleyball student-athlete per day will be highlighted during the team’s two-week European tour (May 20-June 1). Visit the #EuroHogs central page for continued coverage of Arkansas’ four-country stay which includes stops in Italy, Slovenia, Croatia and the Czech Republic. Today’s feature highlights freshman Shelby Harper.
Q: How have the past six months been for you transitioning from high school to now traveling internationally with your college roommates?
Shelby Harper: It’s been a whirlwind with a lot of things coming at me really fast and transitioning to college. That becomes your life. In college you might have three grades (in one class) during a semester but in high school you might have 50 so I had to get used to that part of it, and of course there’s volleyball, too.
Q: What aspects of your game are you working to improve this summer?
Harper: Passing and serve receive. I played all the way around (in high school) and pretty much all club season but as soon as I got to college, it was gone. It’s been frustrating but I’m working really hard to fix it.
Q: What have these first three days in Europe been like for you?
Harper: This has been so incredible. I’m so lucky and blessed to have this opportunity. Being 17 years old and going to four different countries is pretty amazing. Not a lot of people get to do that so I’m feeling very fortunate to be where I’m at right now.
Q: Have you traveled outside of the United States before this trip?
Harper: No, this is my first trip like this.
Q: How long did it take for the jet lag to wear off?
Harper: Honestly, I didn’t have any. I tried to sleep normally when we were traveling. I slept a little bit on the bus, then a little bit on the first flight to New York and then a big chunk of the flight (to Europe) so I think that helped. It was good, plus I had coffee.
Q: What was it like interacting with Club Italia after the matches in Milan?
Harper: It was so cool. They were really sweet and open with us. Some times in America when you play against another team, they don’t like you but it wasn’t like that with them. You can play and compete against each other and still be friends so that was really cool and new for me.
