2009 volleyball schedule announced

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The University of Arkansas’ 2009 volleyball schedule features a strong Southeastern Conference lineup and four NCAA Tournament participants from a year ago, head coach Robert Pulliza announced today. “We’re looking forward to the 2009 schedule,” said Pulliza. “It’s going to be a good test for our young team. On top of the always tough SEC schedule, we will also see teams from the ACC, Big 12 and West Coast Conference along with regional rivals TCU and Tulsa.” The 2009 schedule opens with non-conference play with the Razorbacks taking on both old and new faces. The Texas Christian Invitational pits Arkansas against the host Horned Frogs as well as Loyola Marymount and Grambling State. It is the first meeting with Loyola Marymount and Grambling State and the Razorbacks have not faced the Horned Frogs since 2004. Arkansas works in a mid-week match with Texas-Arlington in Barnhill Arena before traveling to Blacksburg, Va., for the Virginia Tech Invitational. The Razorbacks take on the Hokies as well as Norfolk State and Eastern Carolina. A quick trip to Tulsa for a mid-week match-up precedes the Arkansas Invitational Sept. 11-12, where the Razorbacks host Kansas, North Texas and Jacksonville State. The Razorbacks then begin a home-and-away series with the SEC opening at home with South Carolina and Florida Sept. 18 and 20, respectively. The schedule turns to the road for four consecutive matches at Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia and Auburn before Arkansas returns to the friendly confines of Barnhill hosting Alabama, Mississippi State and a Wednesday match with Ole Miss as October begins. It’s back to the road for three more at LSU, Florida and South Carolina as the Razorbacks begin their second trip through league play. October wraps up with a home match with Kentucky, followed by home contests with Tennessee and LSU to open November. The Razorbacks travel to Mississippi State and Alabama and conclude the home schedule Nov. 20 and 22 hosting Auburn and Georgia. The regular season ends Wednesday, Nov. 25 at Ole Miss. The Razorbacks are scheduled to return to campus for fall workouts the first week of August. Seniors Kristin Seaton and Lindsay Scanlan return leading a young team with seven newcomers. Sophomore Kelli Stipanovich and Seaton represent the majority of the returning offense for the Razorbacks. Mackenzie Rhea and Phoebe Bautista return in the libero position for Arkansas.
