#7 Arkansas 6 #5 Ole Miss 0

October 23, 1954Perhaps the most famous play in UA football history occurred on Oct. 23, 1954. Coach Bowden Wyatt and his affectionately named "25 Little Pigs" were battling Johnny Vaught’s mighty Ole Miss Rebels in War Memorial Stadium. The two teams were scoreless with six minutes left to go in the contest. Assistant coach Dick Hitt called down from the press box to suggest the "Powder River Play." The unique play moniker was termed by Coach Wyatt who had come to Arkansas from Wyoming where the Powder River runs a mile wide and six inches deep. On third and six at the UA 34, Wyatt made the call. Buddy Bob Benson took the snap and darted towards the sideline. As Benson strung the play out, both teams sprinted towards that side of the field except for UA receiver Preston Carpenter. As Benson neared the boundary, he pulled up and lofted a pass 33 yards to the waiting Carpenter who hauled it in and raced another 33 yards to complete a 66-yard touchdown.
