From the Podium: State of the SEC

07/15/2014

As you enter an otherwise non-descript ballroom on the second floor of the Hyatt Regency Birmingham - Wynfrey Hotel on the outskirts of Birmingham, it doesn't take long to notice the air of anticipation. Fresh from summer vacations often spent at tropical locales, media members gather for the first time formally to start what will become a non-stop dialogue until at least the middle of January.

The regret of a summer nearly gone is replaced by the enthusiasm of the specter of another season in the most riveting sports reality show to hit the air waves - Southeastern Conference football. After all, who could have predicted in advance the roller coaster run of Johnny Manziel and Texas A&M in 2012 or Auburn's from worst-to-best finish in 2013. In today's SEC, everyone can win games and make a run. And perhaps more applicable, everyone believes they should win and make a legitimate claim to landing one of the four prestigious spots awaiting in the College Football Playoff.

State of the SEC and the Future of the NCAA
Before the parade of 14 coaches can officially begin, SEC Commissioner Mike Slive delivers his opening keynote address. For comparable reference, take the President of the United States annual State of the Union Address and replace foreign and domestic policy with NCAA governance and student-athlete welfare. The speech can also be the home to significant announcements, including a few years ago when "Project X" officially became the SEC Network which will launch on Aug. 14.

Shortly before I was to introduce Commissioner Slive for this year's event-opening address, the lights in the ballroom were lowered to a level that might be more suitable to the Razorbacks pre-game introduction at Bud Walton Arena or in anticipation of Michael Buffer's signature boxing phrase "Let's Get Ready to Rumble." In this case, it was just a temporary snafu and the lights were soon restored.

When Commissioner Slive stepped to the podium this year, as you would expect, he shared what he called "my annual SEC brag bag." He had plenty to mention including seven national championships and another six national runner-up finishes.

Slive also broached what many in the room were curious to hear. What is the future of the governance of intercollegiate athletics and what will the NCAA's role be in defining that future? Before addressing directly, Slive outlined the base principles.

"We continue to believe the uniquely American endeavor of intercollegiate athletics is properly supported on our campuses as an integral and important part of higher education," Slive said. "Although we must be willing to make appropriate changes in intercollegiate athletics, education must remain at the core of what we do. We must keep athletics and academics properly integrated and ensure that our university's educational missions are fulfilled."

While at first glance, the above statement may not seem to apply to whether the big five conferences will seek to explore their own way, it actually is at the very heart of the issue.

"The educational and cultural significance of intercollegiate athletics is far too important for us not to seek positive solutions to existing challenges," Slive said. "This is why we have been actively engage in building a bridge to provide an avenue of change for the NCAA with the primary objective of enhancing the support enjoyed by Division I student-athletes while maintaining and preserving the collegiate model."

The next few weeks should help indicate whether the SEC and its sister conferences will seek that change through the NCAA or go it alone in what has been termed Division IV. Stay tuned.

Media Days Audible
Based on all the rhetoric surrounding his hurry-up-no huddle offensive philosophy, it was appropriate Auburn's Gus Malzahn was the first coach to the podium for 2014 SEC Football Media Days. Auburn is coming off a national championship runner-up season. And while a week ago Malzahn anticipated questions about the final 13 seconds of the national championship game and the Auburn-Alabama rivalry, he most likely would have preferred answering those questions as opposed to the status of his quarterback Nick Marshall. Marshall was originally scheduled to come to this event, but an arrest last Friday called for an audible in the Tigers' media days' lineup. Instead tight end C.J. Uzomah made the last-minute trip and did an excellent job in his stead.

As far if Marshall would be back for the season opener against Arkansas, Bob Holt of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette made that the first question of the four-day media event. For the record, Malzahn said he "was not at the point," to say what the consequences for Marshall will be. Auburn opens the 2014 season at home against Arkansas on Aug. 30. The game will be televised by the SEC Network.

Going on the Offensive
Florida head coach Will Muschamp always is ready to hit the ground running on media days. When he took the podium for his opening statement, Muschamp delivered a nearly 11 minute opening statement covering everything from the depth chart on both sides of the ball to widespread chatter about him being on the proverbial coaching hot seat.

During his litany of opening statement topics, Muschamp did take an opportunity to expound upon his hiring of former Duke University offensive coordinator Kurt Roper in the off-season. The new Gators' offensive coordinator is the son of former Razorback Bobby Roper who played on the 1964 national championship team. Bobby Roper is best known for blocking two field goals against Texas Tech in the final game of the 1964 season to preserve the Razorbacks' defensive shutout streak.

Muschamp is now looking to Kurt Roper to help jump start the Gators' offense. "We needed to make some changes on offense," Muschamp said. "I felt like our kids had lost confidence in some things we were doing offensively."

Roper, a 2013 Broyles Award finalist, helped lead Duke to a memorable season with a balanced offense. That is something Muschamp says is a must to win in the SEC.

"You can't one-dimensional in this league or you're really going to struggle, in my opinion. We've been too one-dimensional on offense."

Quality First Impression
Vanderbilt's Derek Mason is the only coach making his SEC Football Media Days' debut at the 2014 event. He made a great first impression. Mason could easily be mistaken for one of the student-athletes making their way through the media rotations. He looks like he could still play the game. But when he speaks about what he wants and hopes to do at Vanderbilt, you can tell he has his eyes set on continuing the recent success Vanderbilt has enjoyed.

Mason is coming from a similar set up. He spent the past four seasons at Stanford University, including the last three as defensive coordinator. When asked about the comparisons of building competitive football teams at noted academic institutions like Stanford and Vanderbilt, Mason didn't back down from expectations adding that "being smart shouldn't be an excuse," for not achieving success on the field.

"We have to move past the idea of playing for nine wins. Nine wins, it's really exceptional. At the end of the day why have nine when you can have 10. Why settle for 10 when you can have 11? That's the way I think."
