Afternoon Highlights First Day Of Jerry Pate Intercollegiate

VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. — A 36-hole opening day might have been exactly what the No. 12 University of Arkansas men’s golf team needed, as it bounced back from a disappointing first round to shoot a one-under 279 in the afternoon at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate hosted by Alabama at Old Overton Club on Monday. The Razorbacks second under-par team score of the young season, and one of just five produced by the field of 12 teams over the day’s two rounds, moved them into sole possession of fifth place. Arkansas improved by 16 strokes from morning to afternoon, as all five players shot 73 or lower in round two. No. 1 Alabama (274-278/552) holds a 10-stroke lead over No. 16 Texas A&M (284-278/562), while No. 3 Texas (277-287/564) is third and UAB (284-281/565) is fourth. Half of the 12-team field is ranked in the most recent Golf World/Nike Golf Coaches Poll with two others receiving votes. Headlining the day for Arkansas was its Danish duo of senior Sebastian Cappelen and junior Thomas Sorensen, who both finished in the top 10 in the team’s previous event. Sorensen was Arkansas’ low-man both rounds on the day, opening with a 72 before finishing with a two-under 68 to sit in a tie for eighth place. Along with his cumulative four-under score on the course’s par 5s, Sorensen’s highlight of the day was his final 12 holes where he was three-under and bogey-free. Cappelen equaled Sorensen’s 68 in the afternoon after a 73 in the morning. Sitting in a tie for 11th place, Cappelen’s day started to turn around after his opening nine holes when he made his way to the course’s front nine after beginning off on the back. Over 18 straight holes played on the front (end of round one and start of round two), Cappelen played one-under with five birdies. Sophomore Nicolas Echavarria contributed a pair of scores to the day’s totals with a 74 and 71, respectively. Echavarria made four birdies over his final 11 holes on the day and jumped up 10 spots on the leaderboard from round one to two. Redshirt sophomore Kolton Crawford also finished his day strong with no bogeys over his final 10 holes en route to a 72 in the afternoon. Crawford started the day with a 76 and is in a tie for 39th heading into Tuesday. Sophomore Taylor Moore carded rounds of 78 and 73. The Razorbacks will return to Old Overton Club at 8 a.m. on Tuesday for the final round. Arkansas will be paired with UAB and Auburn, going off the first tee.
