FAYETTEVILLE — In recognition of her work away from the track and outreach efforts on campus and in the community, Makeba Alcide has been named to the 2013 SEC Community Service Team. Alcide is a senior multi-event competitor for the No. 6 University of Arkansas women’s track and field team. Alcide is a participant in Arkansas’ Reading with the Razorbacks and Sweat Hawgs outreach programs to local elementary schools and was involved in Komen Foundation promotion during Chile Pepper Festival. She helped with donating efforts during Harp’s Canned Food Drive and collecting shampoo and soap for 7Hills Homeless Center in Fayetteville. With other Razorback student-athletes, Alcide was part of Adopt-a-Street program to clean up Stadium Drive. The Castries, St. Lucia, native has also volunteered at Special Olympic events and local youth track competitions and served as a volunteer official at 2012 Chile Pepper Festival and 2013 Arkansas High School Meet. At the Hogspy Awards in April, Alcide was named Arkansas’ Female Student-Athlete of the Year. On the track, she is a three-time SEC champion and the NCAA-record holder in the pentathlon. Alcide is also the school-record holder in pentathlon and indoor and outdoor high jump. Arkansas’ championship season begins Thursday with the SEC Outdoor Championships. The conference meet is scheduled for competition May 9-12 at Audrey J. Walton Stadium in Columbia, Mo. The Razorbacks won the SEC Indoor Championships in February and have won three SEC Outdoor Championships (2000-01, 2004) in the program history. Last year, Arkansas finished third at the outdoor conference meet. The 2013 SEC Championships will be streamed live by ESPN3 on Saturday, May 11 from 3:40-6:45 p.m. (CT), and Sunday, May 12 from 2:50-6:45 p.m. Competition outside of the ESPN3 coverage will be available on MUTigers.com.
