Allison earns SEC Defensive Player of the Week honors

FAYETTEVILLE — Junior Amy Allison was named Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Week it was announced Monday. Allison set a personal record and was one shy of the school record recording 14 total blocks versus Alabama. She paced Arkansas to a 19 block day, also hitting .550 with 12 kills. In addition, she collected 8 blocks at Auburn, leading Arkansas to a 3-1 win. "It’s wonderful for Amy," said Arkansas head coach Chris Poole. "It was a great weekend for her. I think overall she had a great weekend but against Alabama she was nearly perfect at the block. She was definitely the spark that got us over the edge as the match progressed." In addition to solid blocking, Allison quietly racked up 12 kills with only one hitting error. "I think they feed off of each other," said Poole. "When Amy blocks well, she plays at a different level offensively. That’s the kind of performance we need from her to be successful this year." Although the honor is the first SEC award to come Allison’s way, the Jenks, Okla., native has garnered other awards. Allison began the 2005 season earning MVP honors at the Arkansas Invitational leading the Lady’Backs to three wins. Allison hit .420 for the tournament with 25 kills, nine digs and 16 total blocks, collecting seven kills and hitting .357 in the 30-24, 30-23, 30-24 win over Memphis. Allison’s offensive numbers are up this year with the junior leading the team with a .308 hitting percentage. She has recorded 116 kills and is averaging 2.07 kills per game this year. In addition, Allison is blocking at the next level as well. She leads the team with 100 total blocks including 15 solos and 85 block assists for a 1.79 block-per-game average. Those season numbers are nearly career-best numbers as well. Prior to this year, Allison had recorded five block solos in 2004 and just one in 2003. She tallied 121 block assists and 126 total blocks last year and will move beyond both of those numbers this season. Allison has tallied six matches with double-digit kill totals including a season-best 12 three times this year. She has hit better than .300 in nine of Arkansas’ matches and had double-figure blocks twice this year. Allison and the Lady Razorbacks return to action Wednesday hosting LSU with the winner claiming sole possession of the top spot in the SEC Western Division race. The match is slated for a 7:00 p.m. start in Barnhill Arena. For more information about Allison and the Lady’Backs log on to LADYBACKS.COM.Allison’s career stats
