Andrews and Carroll Named to Freshman All-Amer

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas freshmen offensive tackle Shawn Andrews and cornerback Ahmad “Batman” Carroll have been named to The Sporting News Freshman All-American teams it was announced on Tuesday.
Andrews earned first-team All-America honors after starting nine of 11 games at right tackle for the Razorbacks. In the two games prior to Andrews’ appearance in the lineup, Arkansas averaged only 103.0 yards of total offense. Following the Camden, Ark., native’s addition to the offensive front, the Hogs averaged 373.0 yards per contest.
Earlier this month, Andrews was named to the Associated Press’ All-SEC second team as well as earning first team spots on both the SEC Coaches’ and Knoxville News-Sentinel’s Freshman All-SEC squads.
Carroll was selected to TSN’s third team after his inaugural campaign in a Razorback uniform. He played in 10 games earning a start at cornerback in five contests. He registered 42 tackles including 27 unassisted stops and ranked second in the SEC with 13 pass deflections. The Atlanta, Ga., standout also was a mainstay on the UA special teams racking up 11 tackles as part of the punt coverage unit. Carroll was a first team SEC All-Freshman team selection by both the SEC Coaches and the Knoxville-News Sentinel.
“I’m extremely proud of the accomplishments of our freshman class,” Arkansas head coach Houston Nutt said. “Both Shawn and Ahmad made an immediate impact on our football team. It is difficult to play in your first season in the Southeastern Conference, but these guys posted great seasons. I’m excited about the future of our younger players.”
Arkansas (7-4) will resume practice on Thursday in anticipation of a New Year’s Day matchup with the No. 10 Oklahoma Sooners (10-2) at the 2002 SBC Cotton Bowl Classic in Dallas, Texas.
