Arkansas Begins Quest for Another National Tit

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Arkansas cross country team begins its quest to repeat as national champions on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at the Razorback Cross Country Course in a three-way meet including Tulsa and Missouri Southern.
After a successful 1999 campaign in which the Hogs won all seven of their meets – including claiming their 26th – consecutive conference title and 10th national championship – the Razorbacks are hoping to duplicate that success in 2000.
“With this being the first meet of the season, we want to use it to see what kind of shape that we are in after the summer,” said UA head coach John McDonnell. “We have not been able to train very hard because of the intense heat so we have had to run early in the morning. We are going to use it as a yardstick to see that we get into the season in full- force.”
Running for the Razorbacks will be Alan Dunleavy, Ryan Joseph, James Karanu, Daniel Lincoln, Murray Link, Mark Thompson, Phil Yoder and Eric Zack. The top five finishers from each team will score to determine the team totals. Karanu and Link are All-Americans who placed 10th and 22nd, respectively, at the 1999 NCAA Championships.
The men’s race is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. following the women’s race at 6 p.m.
