Arkansas Falls to Northwestern, 4-3

CHICAGO, Ill. – Arkansas (3-1), No. 25 in the nation, suffered its first loss of the season Sunday losing to the No. 37 Northwestern Wildcats 4-3 at Northwestern University’s Combe Tennis Center.
“I couldn’t be more proud of Adrians,” head coach Robert Cox said. “He has been battling the flu this entire weekend. He gutted it out at two singles. We had our chances at doubles today, but came up a little short.”
Doubles saw Northwestern taking the early lead 1-0 after winning two out of three doubles matches. Number one doubles saw Arkansas’ Nathan Price and Matt Simpson defeating Northwestern’s Chuck Perrin and Justin Hoeveler, 8-2. At two doubles, Matt Roberts and Imraan Ismail lost to Tommy Hanus and Christian Tempke, 8-2. With the doubles matches tied 1-1, the third and clinching match came down to three doubles with Rohan Gajjar and Viktor Hebrand taking on Adam Scheachterle and Matt Christian. After the two teams tied at 8-8, the teams played a decisive tiebreaker with Scheachterle and Christian winning, 9-8(7-4).
With Adrians Zguns recovering from the flu, the Razorbacks shuffled its line up around once again Sunday to play the Wildcats. Nathan Price, No. 50 in the nation, once again played number one singles taking on Northwestern’s Tommy Hanus. Price defeated Hanus, 7-5, 6-3. Adrians Zguns, No. 14 in the nation, moved down to two singles to play Christian Tempke. Zguns started slowly losing the first set, 6-1, but rebounded in the second set pulling out a tiebreaker to even the match at a set apiece. Zguns would defeat Tempke in a ten-point tiebreaker to win the match, 1-6, 7-6 (7-2), 1-0 (10-5). At number three singles, Chuck Perrin of Northwestern defeated Arkansas’ Matt Simpson, 6-4, 6-2. Willy Lock and Rohan Gajjar played a close first set at four singles with Lock winning by a break of serve to take the set, 6-4. Lock kept the momentum to win the match, 6-4, 6-1. Number five singles had Arkansas’ Matt Roberts taking on Northwestern’s Matt Christian. Christian defeated Roberts, 6-3, 6-2. Imraan Ismail and Adam Scheachterle played six singles with Ismail winning, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-2).
Next on the Hogs schedule is Wichita State on Friday, Feb. 20 at 5:30 p.m. at the Dills Indoor Tennis Center.
