FAYETTEVILLE-As tournament time grows in the distance, the University of Arkansas women’s tennis team is looking at April as anything but a time for jokes.
The ailing Lady Razorbacks (8-9) need to pick a couple of key wins in upcoming matches to keep NCAA tournament hopes alive in 2004. The Lady’Backs kick off their April campaign Friday against the University of Alabama (9-7), followed by fellow Alabaman school Auburn University (7-10) on Sunday, April 4th.
Historically, the Lady’Backs have gotten back on the right foot during the first week of April. Since the 1997 season, the Lady’Backs are 10-5 in the first week of April. Seven of those 10 wins came over Southeastern Conference opponents. Moreover, four of those wins came against the Alabama and Auburn, the same two teams coming to Fayetteville this weekend.
All-time records against these two foes have been neck and neck. Arkansas leads all-time against Auburn, 10-9, and is tied all-time with Alabama at 10 apiece.
Several Arkansas players have shown their ability during SEC play. In fact, five players on the Lady’Back roster have wins against SEC teams this year. Senior Anna Dybicz leads the team with three wins.
Dybicz, along with fellow teammate Megan Ferreira, compete in their final home match on Sunday. Both seniors played the majority of the 2004 season together at the No. 1 doubles position with a record of 8-8 for the year.
Both players have also split time at the No. 1 singles spot. Dybicz’s record at the No. 1 slot stands at 3-4. Ferreira is 5-10 for the year in all singles matches.
The action begins against Alabama at 2:00 p.m. at the UA Varsity Courts. Admission is free. For more information and live scoring on game day, please visit www.ladybacks.com and jump to tennis.
