Arkansas Rallies Past ORU 6-3; Wishy’s Two-Out

FAYETTEVILLE, ARK. – The Arkansas Razorbacks rallied from a 3-2 deficit with four runs in the seventh inning to come away with a 6-3 victory over the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles Tuesday night at Baum Stadium.
The win snapped a four-game losing skid for the Razorbacks and upped their record to 24-18 overall. Oral Roberts dropped to 29-15 with loss.
Relief pitcher Jarrett Gardner pitched four and two-thirds innings without allowing a hit to earn the victory. Gardner struck out four and walked three in upping his record to 2-2.
Michael Rogers took the loss for ORU to fall to 7-3 on the year. Rogers allowed six runs, five earned, on six hits in six and two-thirds innings. Rogers fanned seven and walked four in the decision.
The Razorbacks scored first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Kirk McConnell walked, stole second and scored on a double to left by Scott Bridges. After Andrew Wishy walked, Michael Conner was hit by a pitch to load the bases. The Hogs plated their second run on a passed ball by Golden Eagles’ catcher David Castillo.
Oral Roberts tallied a run in the top of the second to make it a 2-1 game. Dennis Bigley singled and moved to third on a ground out. Billy Joe Richardson hit a sharp ball in the hole at short that fielder Scott Hode snared on a running pivot. Hode’s throw sailed past first and allowed Bigley to score.
ORU tied the game in the third. Danny Boyle walked and was followed by singles by Doug Bernier and Castillo to load the bases. Wilton Reynolds plated Boyle with a sacrifice fly to center to knot the game at 2-2.
Relief pitcher Jarrett Gardner was brought in for Merryman and walked Eric Thornton to load the bases with one out. After a pop-out, Gardner walked Chad Stewart to bring in the go-ahead run. Gardner forced a pair of fly-outs to end the inning with ORU leading 3-2.
Rogers remained strong on the mound for the Golden Eagles through six innings. In the seventh, however, the Razorback bats came alive. Jeff Fletcher singled to begin the inning and advanced to second on a single to right by Kirk McConnell. Scott Bridges was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Andrew Wishy.
With two outs, Wishy laced a 3-2 pitch into right field to score Fletcher and McConnell to give the Hogs a 4-3 lead. A single by Ryan Fox plated Bridges for a 5-3 Arkansas lead. Michael Conner added to the lead with a single deep in the hole at short that scored Wishy to give the Hogs a 6-3 margin.
Kyler Pomeroy was brought in to work the eighth and ninth innings in relief of Gardner. Pomeroy set the Golden Eagles down order in the final two innings to earn his second save of the year.
The Razorbacks return to action Wednesday, May 1, when they host Southwest Missouri State at 5 p.m. at Baum Stadium.
