Arkansas Sweeps Lamar, UMKC

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Arkansas men’s tennis team snapped a three-match losing streak with a doubleheader sweep of Lamar and UMKC on Saturday afternoon at the Dills Indoor Tennis Center. The Razorbacks (4-5) defeated both teams by the same 7-0 score and won all 17 singles and doubles matches completed in the day.

Arkansas won the doubles point and all six singles matches on the way to a 7-0 win over Lamar. Mike Redlicki clinched the win at No. 1 singles, while Jose Salazar, Adam Sanjurjo and Johan den Toom won in three sets at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 singles, respectively to complete the 7-0 sweep.

Arkansas repeated the feat, winning the doubles point and all six singles matches in a 7-0 win over UMKC. The Razorbacks quickly clinched the doubles point at No. 3 and No. 1 doubles, dropping just one game between the two matches. They dropped just one set in singles play, as Johan den Toom and Juan Marino won at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively, and Oscar Mesquida clinched the win at No. 4 singles.

“It was a good team day today,” head coach Andy Jackson said. “Overall, everyone played better. We knew that Lamar was a top-50 caliber team and would come in here to win the match. We were prepared and we were disciplined. We know that it is difficult to shut teams out. Going forward, we must player better than we did today to win SEC matches.”

Arkansas 7, Lamar 0

Both teams held serve in the early portion of doubles action, before Mike Redlicki and Jose Salazar won a break in the seventh game at No. 1 doubles, and the other two Arkansas doubles teams won breaks in the eighth games of their respective matches at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.

After those two breaks in the eighth games, Johan den Toom and Branch Terrell served it out for the 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles, and then Adam Sanjurjo and Oscar Mesquida clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles.

Arkansas won the first set in four of the six singles matches. Juan Marino was the first off the court, rolling to a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles. Oscar Mesquida followed with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles. Play had extended into third sets at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 singles, when No. 6 Mike Redlicki clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles.

Play continued in the other three singles matches. Adam Sanjurjo completed his comeback at No. 3 singles, 1-6, 7-5, 6-2, while Jose Salazar finished off his match at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1. Johan den Toom, like Sanjurjo, battled back to force a third set and closed out the 7-0 sweep with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles.

 Arkansas 7, UMKC 0

Arkansas rolled early in doubles play, as Jacob Herndon and Austin Robles won 6-0 at No. 3 doubles, and Adam Sanjurjo and Oscar Mesquida clinched the match with a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles. Johan den Toom and Branch Terrell completed the doubles sweep at No. 2 doubles, winning in a tiebreaker, 6-5 (5).

The Razorbacks dropped just one set on the way to six wins in singles play. Johan den Toom won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5 singles, and then Juan Marino followed with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles. Oscar Mesquida clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles.

Jose Salazar and Adam Sanjurjo won their respective matches at No. 1 and No. 3 singles in straight sets, and then after dropping the second set, Branch Terrell finished off a 6-4, 1-6, 1-0 (10-7) win in a super tiebreaker at No. 2 singles.

  • Mike Redlicki has clinched two of four wins this season for the Razorbacks. He clinched the 4-3 win over Tulsa and the 7-0 win over Lamar.
  • Adam Sanjurjo won 12 of the final 15 games in his 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles against Lamar.
  • Johan den Toom and Juan Marino did not drop a single game in their first-set wins against UMKC, on their way to being the first and second singles players off the court in the match.
  • Oscar Mesquida clinched the 7-0 win over UMKC with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles.
  • Arkansas has won the doubles point in six of eight matches this season.
  • Jose Salazar leads the team in singles wins, improving to 6-2 this season, while Oscar Mesquida leads the team in doubles wins, improving to 6-3 on the season.
