Arkansas Takes Sixth Place At Carmel Cup

CARMEL, Calif. – The Arkansas men’s golf team fired a final round 3-over 363 on Sunday to finish in sixth place at the seventh annual Carmel Cup at Pebble Beach Golf Club.

In one of the toughest fields in all of college golf, Arkansas finished the week alone in sixth place with rounds of 354-354-363 – 1071 (-9), posting its second lowest score at the tournament during the last four years.

The top teams in the nation found themselves atop the leaderboard in California, as No. 2 Oklahoma State ran away from the field and captured a 14-shot victory at 52-under. Texas Tech (-38) finished second, No. 7 and defending National Champion Oklahoma (-33) took third and No. 1 Vanderbilt (-27) was fourth. Arkansas defeated Ohio State by 10 shots and bested No. 27 Georgia by five strokes.

For the second straight year, senior Alvaro Ortiz recorded three straight rounds under par at the event, this time posting rounds of 70-66-70 – 206 (-10) to finish inside the top 10 after taking runner-up honors a last season. In his last six rounds at Pebble Beach, the Zapopan, Mexico, native is a combined 22-under par.

Sophomores Mason Overstreet and Luis Garza finished the weekend T-20th overall at 4-under after Overstreet recorded a 1-under 71 on Sunday, while Garza followed up his 66 on Saturday with a final round 2-over 74. William Buhl (34th), Charles Kim (38th) and Dylan Naidoo (T-41st) rounded out the team

The Razorbacks return to action Sept. 10-11 for their second event of the year, traveling to Minnesota for the Gopher Invitational at Windsong Farm Golf Club.
