Arkansas Wins Tie-Breaker Over Denver

ATHENS, Ga. – Victories by sophomore Cara Gorlei and junior Alana Uriell propelled the 16th-ranked University of Arkansas women’s golf team to a match play win over Denver and third place at the 45th Annual Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic in Athens, Georgia, on Sunday.

Arkansas, who went 1-1 on Saturday using a tie-breaker to defeat Auburn in the first match, also needed a tie-breaker to defeat Denver on Sunday.

Uriell won her match 3&2 after taking the lead on the ninth hole in the final match on Sunday. She finished all square against Auburn and won 1-up against Georgia capping off a good weekend of play.

Gorlei was solid from start to finish in the 4&3 win on Sunday. She opened with a pair of birdies while her opponent bogeyed two holes allowing the Cape Town, South Africa, native to go up-4 in the first five holes.

Sophomore Kaylee Benton trailed early, down by three holes. She took advantage of a bogey by her opponent on the 14th hole and picked up two birdies to finish all square in her match. Benton was a 3&2 winner yesterday and was also all square in her match against Georgia on Saturday.

The tie-breaker to decide the team victory comes down to tie break points. Arkansas won matches 4&3 and 3&2 for seven points. Denver won two matches 1-up for two points. Benton’s even finish helped secure the third-place finish for the Razorbacks.

Senior Summar Roachell and sophomore Maria Fassi both fell in close matches.

“Alana and Cara made a big statement in their matches today,” Arkansas head coach Shauna Estes-Taylor said. “Kaylee was 3-down and tied her match for us to win the tie-breaker. Match play is a great format that requires a little different mindset so the Liz Murphey gives us great experience for our team and for us as coaches. We are heading back to Fayetteville with a few items to tidy up and get ready for the best time of year as we begin the postseason.”

Arkansas returns to the links April 21-23 in Birmingham, Alabama, at the Southeastern Conference Championship before heading to NCAA Regional and NCAA Championship play.
