Arkansas sophomore Nick Schmidt (2-0) decided he would wait at least one more week before allowing his first hit of the season … the left-hander from St. Louis, Mo., pitched six innings against No. 18 TCU, holding the Horned Frogs hitless … Schmidt has now pitched 12 innings in 2006 without surrendering a base hit … he held Oklahoma State without a hit over six innings last Saturday … stuck out seven Horned Frogs on Friday and walked just one … has 13 strikeouts and just four walks this season.

Senior outfielder Chris Hollensworth hit .500 over at the Al Ogletree Classic in Edinburg, Texas, this past weekend … the senior from El Dorado, Ark., collected six hits, including two doubles and three RBI … scored five runs and was 2-for-2 on the base paths … went 1 for 1 in a reserve role against No. 18 TCU on Friday … stole one base against the Horned Frogs … started and went 3 for 6 with a double and a RBI against Stephen F. Austin … also swiped a base against the Lumberjacks … equaled his career high with three runs scored against SFA … his six at bats was also a career high … was 2 for 5 with a double and two RBI against host Texas-Pan American on Sunday in a 13-2 Arkansas rout.

Razorbacks Sweep Al Ogletree Classic

No. 17 Arkansas improved to 6-0 on the season by sweeping three games at the Al Ogletree Classic in Edinburg, Texas over the weekend … the highlight win was a 5-2 decision over No. 18 TCU in the tournament opener … the Hogs began to put everything together at the plate and on the mound in South Texas … UA posted a .363 batting average in the three-game tournament and a 1.33 ERA on the mound … collected 41 hits on the weekend … had 19 hits against Stephen F. Austin and 14 vs. Texas-Pan American … the Razorbacks also ran wild on the base paths with 13 stolen bases in 14 attempts over the weekend … LHP Nick Schmidt (2-0) was up to his old tricks by pitching six more scoreless innings against TCU on Friday … Schmidt has now thrown 12 innings this season in two outings without allowing a base hit … stuck out seven TCU hitters and walked just one … has 13 strikeouts and four walks … the Razorbacks scored five runs off Horned Frogs’ ace Sam Demel on Friday … Craig Gentry led the way with a 3-for-3 performance and a RBI … Gentry will miss two-to-three weeks with broken hand that was discovered following Friday’s game … freshman Wayne Hrozek and sophomore Brian Walker got things started in the first inning against TCU with back-to-back doubles down the right-field line … Hrozek’s double plated two runs and Walker scored one run … Devin Collis pitched the final 1.1 innings for his third save of the season … Arkansas rolled to a 15-7 win over Stephen F. Austin on Saturday … starting pitcher Charley Boyce became the all-time school leader in starts with 47 … it was also his shortest career start at one-plus inning … The Hogs collected season highs in hits (19), runs (15), stolen bases (7) and errors (6) … it was the first time since April 16, 2005, (at Tennessee) that Arkansas has committed six errors in a game … Matt Willard (3B) and James Ewing (2B) made their first career starts against the Lumberjacks … they both also collected their first career hits … Ewing reached base in all six plate appearances and went 3 for 3 … Hrozek and Hollensworth also collected three hits vs. SFA … Jake Dugger was 2 for 6 with two RBI … Danny Hamblin went 2 for 4 and drew two walks … Trey Holloway (1-0) got the win out of the bullpen with three scoreless, hitless innings … Lee Land also threw well with three scoreless, hitless innings of work … Shaun Seibert saw his first action of the season … struck out two and did not walk a batter … junior college transfer Chris Rhoads (2-0) sparkled in his second start of the season … pitched a UA season-high seven innings allowing just two unearned runs on five hits … stuck out a career high seven batters and walked just one … Brian Walker led the way at the plate with three hits in five at bats … also drove in two runs … Walker batted .500 (4 for 8) in two starts over the weekend … Hollensworth, Hamblin, Arnold and Walker all drove in two runs vs. the Broncs … Hamblin leads the team with a four-game hit streak … Hollensworth has hit in three straight games … Jake Dugger continues to lead the team in hitting at .440 and RBI seven … he also leads the team in multiple-hit games with four … freshman James Ewing and Matt Willard received their first playing time this weekend and performed well … Ewing started two games and hit .571 (4 for 7) with a .727 on-base percentage … Willard also hit .571 (4 for 7) with a .700 on-base percentage and two RBI.

Next Week

Arkansas returns home for the 2006 home opener at Baum Stadium with a double header with Louisiana Tech beginning at 1 p.m. on Feb. 24 … the third and final game of the series is slated for 1 p.m. on Saturday at Baum Stadium and will be broadcast on Cox Sports Television … the Razorbacks then leave for the Rainbow Classic in Honolulu, Hawai’i, on Sunday … the Hogs open the tournament on Tuesday, Feb. 28, with Washington … Arkansas then faces Texas-Arlington on Wednesday, March 1 … and Hawai’i on Thursday, March 2 … the semifinals are slated for Friday with the finals on Saturday.
