Team Notes:The 13th-ranked Arkansas baseball team won four of its five games on the week, sweeping a two-game midweek series from Mississippi Valley State and winning two of three games over the weekend against No. 15 Mississippi State. The Razorbacks are now 21-8 on the season and 6-3 in Southeastern Conference play. Arkansas hit .224 as a team on the week, while the pitching staff had a team ERA of 1.40. Tyler Spoon led the Razorbacks at the plate, batting .316 (6-for-19) with two RBI and three runs scored. Jacob Mahan batted .313 (5-for-16) with a RBI and two runs scored, while Matt Vinson drove in a team-high five runs on the week. Jean Ramirez went 3-for-4 with two runs scored in a start Tuesday vs. Mississippi Valley State, while Brett McAfee was 2-for-3 with a run scored on Tuesday vs. the Delta Devils. On the mound, Randall Fant turned in his fourth consecutive quality start in the series finale on Sunday vs. Mississippi State. Fant allowed one run on four hits and struck out five in six innings of work to lead the Razorbacks to a series victory over the Bulldogs. Jalen Beeks pitched in three games on the week and had a 1-0 record with a save. Beeks worked four scoreless innings on the week and has now tossed 14 consecutive shutout innings over his last nine appearances. Colby Suggs picked up a pair of saves in the series vs. Mississippi State, striking out a pair in 1.2 hitless innings. Colin Poche started Tuesday’s game vs. Mississippi Valley State and earned the victory, striking out six in four shutout innings. On Wednesday, Tyler Wright started and got the win after fanning five in four scoreless innings. Barrett Astin started the series opener vs. Mississippi State and pitched well, but received a no decision after giving up two runs on seven hits and striking out six in 5.2 innings. Trent Daniel, Michael Gunn, Trey Killian and Chris Oliver each had two scoreless appearances out of the Razorback bullpen on the week. The Razorbacks continue SEC play next week at Alabama. Game times for the weekend series are set for 7 p.m. on Thursday, 6:35 p.m. on Friday and 1:05 p.m. on Saturday. The Thursday game will be televised on ESPNU.
