Arkansas Bows Out of ITA Central Championships
TULSA, Okla. – The ITA Central Region Championships came to an early end for Arkansas on Sunday when its singles and doubles players fell in the main draw matches at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
“It’s a little disappointing,” Arkansas head coach Robert Cox said. “Michael Jung winning in the backdraw was a bright spot. We’re going away from this tournament a better team and now we know what to improve on.”
Sophomore Michael Jung was the only Razorback to come away with a win as he made his way through the backdraw brackets to win the final in the third set over Arkansas-Little Rock’s Eduardo Austran, 7-6, 5-7, 6-1. He also claimed victory in the semifinals in the third set, going 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, over Nebraska’s Jerry Posch. With his solid play Jung improved to 12-2 on the season.
Senior Adrians Zguns was defeated in the quarterfinals by Oklahoma State’s Daniel Byrnes, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. Zguns is now 6-2 during the fall season.
In the main draw doubles semifinals senior Matt Roberts and freshman Blake Strode faced the tough Oklahoma duo of Alexei Ivanov and Marek Velicka. The Hogs had powered their way through three rounds with solid performances, but lost to 8-2, in their first tournament together.
After the Razorbacks return from Tulsa, Okla., they will split up to travel to different tournaments. Seniors Rohan Gajjar and Roberts will head to the Arizona State Invitational in Tempe, while Zguns will compete at the University of Texas in Austin.
