Arkansas Downs Two School Records In The Pool
ATHENS, Ga. — Sophomore Anna Mayfield (San Antonio, Texas) and junior Susanna White (Forest, Va.) each took down a school record during the second night of SEC Championships at the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga., in front of an announced attendance of 1,289. The pair helped set the tone for four personal-best times over two events for the Razorbacks.
“They went to work today, but they were only able to do that from the kind of work that they do all year long from Aug. 26 up until today,” head coach Sean Schimmel said. “We talk about allowing that work to show up and this is the stage to let it shine. Those two certainly did that with some highlights there. They just really kind of inspired us to get some work done. We had five ladies in that 500 freestyle tonight and that’s a pretty big percentage of the people here scoring points in that event. We’re pretty proud of that. Our middle to milers and our freestyle group, they take a lot of pride in those events and that really showed up today.”
Mayfield began Arkansas’ evening by breaking the school record in the 500 freestyle set in 2011 by former Razorback All-American Chelsea Franklin. Mayfield’s 13th-place finish of 4:41.56 was a personal-best time. Mayfield was joined in the B Final by senior Nicole Menzel (Hilton Head, S.C.) who swam a season-best time of 4:44.83. In the C Final, junior Lauren Jordan (Carmel, Ind.) won the heat with a personal-best time of 4:42.95. Freshman Aiden Lister (Toowoomba, Australia) finished with a time of 4:46.44 and sophomore Rachel Stoehr (Lake Forest, Ill.) rounded out the Razorbacks with a personal-best time of 4:46.70. All times were NCAA ‘B’ cuts.
White broke the Arkansas school record she set earlier in prelims by posting a 22.27 in the 50 freestyle to win the B Final. Sophomore Nina Drolc (Velenje, Slovenia) represented Arkansas in the C Final, finishing 22nd with an NCAA ‘B’ time of 22.78.
Arkansas’ ‘A’ relay team of White, Drolc, sophomore Maddie Monroe (Godfrey, Ill.) and senior Shelby Cox (Little Rock, Ark.),recorded a season-best time of 1:30.54 in the 200 freestyle relay. The time is the second-fastest in program history.
Arkansas finished day two in fifth place after the second finals session with a total of 217 points.
The team returns to action Thursday morning with competitors in four events, including diving. Senior Kesha Naylor (Saskatchewan, Canada), Hannah Bortnick and Shelby Bartlett will return to action on the three-meter springboards. On the swimming side, the 400 individual medley is scheduled to feature Menzel, senior Julia Kucherich (York, Pa.), and freshman Katie Kearbey (Nevada, Mo.). The 100 butterfly slates White, seniors Aubrey Golbek (Noblesville, Ind.) and Shelby Cox (Little Rock, Ark.), Kearbey and freshman Anna Williams (Naperville, Ill.). The 200 freestyle participants include Mayfield, Stoehr, Menzel, Drolc, Jordan, Lister, Monroe and freshman Leia Bates(San Antonio, Texas).
