Arkansas drops series to Ole Miss

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Arkansas softball team dropped the final game of a Southeastern Conference series 6-1 to Ole Miss on Sunday afternoon at Lady’Back Yard. Ole Miss won the series 2-1 and improved to 22-26 overall and 6-19 in the SEC. The Lady Razorbacks fell to 33-22 and 6-16 in league play. Junior Whitney Cloer and sophomore Brittany Robison came together in the fifth inning with singles that broke up Becky Nye’s no hitter and put Arkansas on the scoreboard. Senior Dayna Huckabee also collected a hit in the game. “Ole Miss was better than us this weekend,” said head coach Jamie Pinkerton. “I didn’t have them prepared and Ole Miss had a sense of urgency and we didn’t. We can still get a five seed (in the SEC Tournament), but not playing like this.” Ole Miss scored first in the top of the second. Lauren Rowe led off the inning and reached base on a walk. She was sacrificed to second before Michelle May doubled to left center to score Rowe and then advanced to third on an Arkansas error. Courtnie Ghinaudo plated May on a sacrifice fly to right field to get the Rebels out to a 2-0 lead. I n the bottom of the fifth Cloer broke up Nye’s no hitter with a single to center field. Senior Samantha Buckner reached base on a fielder’s choice and Cloer moved to second on an infield error. Robison then blasted a single to left field to score Cloer and move the Lady’Backs within one run. In the top of the sixth a grand-slam home run to left field by Lisa Conchos put four runs on the scoreboard and moved Ole Miss out of reach 6-1. Nye (10-9) was the winning pitcher and allowed one run on three hits, walked one and struck out three. Senior Katy Henry (16-10) earned the loss in the circle. Freshman Layne McGuirt threw three scoreless innings in relief yesterday and gave up just one hit. McGuirt did more of the same today allowing two hits in one and one-third innings. The Lady’Backs have six SEC games remaining and travel to Baton Rouge, La., this weekend for a three game set with LSU. For more information about Arkansas softball, please log on to LADYBACKS.COM.
