Arkansas football practice report

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Arkansas football team practiced Tuesday on the practice fields just south of Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium. Tuesday’s eveningsession was the second of the day and marked the first two-a-day for Arkansas. The Razorbacks also practiced Tuesday morning on the practice fields. The Razorbacks will practice Wednesday, 9 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. The following is a transcript of selected quotes from Special Teams Coordinator John L. Smith’s media availability following Tuesday’s workout:

On the performance of the special teams at Tuesday’s practice:

"We are still getting a lot of things in early on and we are kicking at the end (of practice). All those kids have been kicking a lot but it was just okay. I expect it to get a lot better. Everyday it’ll get better. We are still learning. At this point in camp, we are still learning a lot every day. I was okay with practice."

On the presence of Freddy Burton and Jerico Nelson in game situations:

"That depends on what kind of offense we are going to see and how they game develops. If the football is thrown a lot, they are going to find themselves in situations where they have to become one dimensional. In that situation, Jerico would be on the field a lot more. If we are playing base defenses and going two dimensional, then Freddy will be out there more. I see us as needing both of those guys but they need to get through a game and run what we need them to run."

On the performance of the punters at practice:

"The punters have been pretty good so far I like what I have seen so far. Competition is always good. They have both been hitting the ball pretty good. It could come down to operation time; who can get out the quickest. We’ll have to wait and see on that. Right now I’m pleased with the competition we have there."

On moving Bret Harris to will linebacker:

"Moving Bret was a matter of the staff sitting down and finding your best 11, the guys who have worked the hardest and earned the opportunity to play. We moved Bret from the outside to give him a shot at will linebacker to see how he develops there. He definitely brings some things to table and we just need to see how he develops. He has good speed and he’s a very intelligent guy."

"We are trying to get the most out of every guys and figure out a way for them to contribute to the football team."

On the depth at the linebacker position:

"There are a few new guys who I think are going to help out at that position. (Terrell) Williams is going to help out and be a heck of a player. I think they are pushing each other and they have all worked hard. When you get good, that’s when you create good competition."
