Gym’Backs FALL ON FRIDAY THE 13THThe University of Arkansas gymnastics team struggled at No. 14 Missouri falling to the Tigers, 195.100-192.225 on Friday the 13th. Despite counting falls, the Gym’Backs’ overall score was better than the first meet of the season (192.225 compared to 190.625 in Hawai’i). Arkansas improved its numbers on every event except the floor exercise.
The Long Road AheadArkansas next travels to No. 3 Georgia for dual meet action. The Gym’Backs are wrapping up their longest road stand of the year at Georgia finishing three in a row on the road. Arkansas has two, two-meet road stands remaining on the schedule.
BARNETT SOLID AT MISSOURIJunior Rachel Barnett improved all of her numbers in the second outing of the season at Missouri last week. The Oklahoma City, Okla., native posted a 9.225 on bars, a 9.775 on beam and a 9.775 on floor for Arkansas.
DANA McQUILLIN AN ALL-AROUND SUCCESSSenior Dana McQuillin also showed well at Missouri finishing second in the all-around competition. The West Orange, N.J., improved her numbers on the vault, beam and floor finishing with a 38.700 for the meet. McQuillin currenlty ranks 41st in the country for the all-around.
EMILY PEACOCK COMING ON STRONGSophomore Emily Peacock has had a good start to the young season. Peacock bettered her opening meet 9.80 on bars with a 9.875 on the apparatus at Missouri. Her score ranks Peacock tied for ninth in the country on bars this week. She is averaging a 9.837 on the event for the year.
SAMANTHA CORTEZ ON THE FLOORSophomore Samantha Cortez is ranked tied for 28th this week on the floor exercise. Cortez’s high this year is a 9.825 set at Missouri last week.
ABOUT GEORGIAThe Georgia Gym Dogs (5-0) opened their home slate on Saturday with a 195.825-188.300 win over the No. 19-ranked Maryland Terrapins (1-1) with a crowd of 9,323 at Stegeman Coliseum. Courtney Kupets paced the Gym Dogs with a 39.475 in the individual all-around competition while Katie Heenan contributed a 39.375. Georgia enters this week’s meet ranked third in the country.
ARKANSAS-GEORGIA AVAILABLE ON-LINEThe meet between the Gym’Backs and the Gym Dogs will be available on-line. Watch all of the routines on LADYBACKS.COM as a pay-per-view event. Georgia will also have the event on their website at georgiadogs.com. The fee is expected to be $6.95 on either site.
Arkansas Against The BULLDOGSThe Gym’Backs have never defeated Georgia in the three seasons of the program. Georgia has won the six meetings, twice in Fayetteville, once in Athens and three times at the SEC Championship. Georgia has never been ranked lower than eighth when meeting Arkansas and has been as high as second in the country when facing the Gym’Backs.
THE SCORES AGAINST GEORGIAAlthough Arkansas has not defeated Georgia, the Gym’Backs have improved against the Bulldogs in most of the six meetings. Arkansas’ lowest score against Georgia was a 194.225 in the first meeting between the teams in 2003. The Bulldogs won that contest 197.225-194.225. Arkansas’ best score came at the SEC Championship with a 195.325. The closest margin was also last year in dual meet action, a 195.300-195.150, Bulldog win in Fayetteville.
ARKANSAS SIXTH IN SOUTH CENTRAL REGIONThe Gym’Backs are looking to move up in the South Central Region. Currently Arkansas is sixth behind Nebraska, Missouri, Arizona, Oklahoma and Arizona State. SEC STRONG IN THE POLLThe Southeastern Conference is well represented in the most recent national poll. Alabama, Florida and Georgia have a strangle-hold on the top three spots followed by No. 7 Auburn, N. 12 Kentucky, No. 14 LSU and Arkansas at No. 24.
UPCOMING SEC SCHEDULEThe Southeastern Conference schedule is just beginning with several big meets right out of the gate. In addition to Arkansas traveling to Georgia this Friday, three other SEC teams are in action. Here’s a quick look at the SEC schedule for the rest of the month.

Finally At HomeArkansas opens the home season Friday, Jan. 27, hosting No. 8 LSU at 7:00 p.m. Arkansas is 0-7 lifetime against the Tigers but has been steadily closing the gap in recent meets. This is LSU’s second trip to Fayetteville since 2003. The LSU meet is the first of five regular season home meets for Arkansas as the Gym’Backs also host Penn State, Kentucky, Auburn and Washington. In addition to the regular season, the Gym’Backs host the 2006 NCAA South Central Regional Meet April 8, in Barnhill.
