Arkansas Women’s Golf Fact Sheet #1

Razorbacks open 2008-09 at NCAA Preview The University of Arkansas women’s golf team opens the 2008-09 season at the NCAA Preview in Owings Mills, Md., Sept. 7-8.
Welcome Back Shauna Estes-Taylor and Mike Adams return for their second seasons leading the Arkansas women’s golf team. Estes-Taylor took over the head coaching spot last year in her first stint in the first chair. Adams joined Estes-Taylor in leading Arkansas to a program-best eighth-place finish in the country last year.
Invitation Only The NCAA Preview is an invitation-only event with the top teams from last year’s NCAA Championship invited. It is the second time in program history Arkansas has been selected. This year’s field includes: No. 10 Alabama, No. 4 Arizona State, No. 15 Arkansas, No. 9 Auburn, No. 11 Denver, No. 3 Duke, No. 8 Florida, No. 6 Georgia, No. 5 Oklahoma State, No. 7 Purdue, No. 1 USC, No. 18 Texas A&M, No. 14 Virginia, No. 12 Wake Forest and host Georgetown.
Two Times Arkansas hopes to make it two times. The Razorbacks begin the year at the NCAA Preview, which, as it’s name suggests, is a preview to the final meet of the year – the NCAA Championship in mid-May.
Arkansas in the poll The Razorbacks open 2008-09 ranked No. 15 in the Golf World Coaches poll. The preseason poll recognizes Arkansas’ eighth place NCAA Championship finish a year ago and the fact that the Razorbacks return four players from that team.
Speaking of returning Arkansas returns four of five players from last year’s NCAA Tournament team and all but three players from last year’s roster. The returners include lone senior Lucy Nunn, who won her first amateur event over the summer. Joining Nunn are juniors Kristin Ingram and Alex Schulte and sophomore Kelli Shean from last year’s traveling five. Also back is junior Natalie Beach, juniors Tiffany Phelps, Corinna Rees and Tanica van As.
Lone Newcomer Arkansas has one newcomer for the 2008-09 season. Freshman Katy Nugent joins the Razorbacks from Kansas after a solid prep career. Look for Nugent to challenge for one of the five traveling spots early this year.
What’s missing? Stacy Lewis. Lewis graduated as the most decorated collegiate golfer in program history last May. She competed as a professional this summer and will attend Qualifying School this fall to earn her LPGA card.
Shean earns SEC academic honor Lone freshman Kelli Shean represented the women’s golf team on the 2008 Southeastern Conference Freshmen Academic Honor Roll . Shean, a general business major from Cape Town, South Africa, was a leader on and off the course. She finished the year third on the team in stroke average and earned selection to the SEC All-Freshman team.
