Bordes Named SEC Athlete of the Week
BY ANDRES FOCIL
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – After claiming top honors at the four-mile Arkansas Invitational on Sept. 3, junior Luis Bordes was named the Southeastern Conference’s Athlete of the Week. The league award was the first of his career, since he battled back from injuries in 2003.
“This is great for Luis, especially for him to come back after being hurt for most of last year,” Arkansas head coach John McDonnell said. “It couldn’t have happened to a better guy. He’s a very, very hard worker.”
The Arkansas Invitational was UA’s first cross country meet of the season and Bordes led the Razorbacks to a team victory with a perfect score (15). In the process he picked up his first career first-place finish and his performance helped guide six other Hogs to top 10 showings. The Woodlands, Texas native’s winning time of 20:17 was 15 seconds better than when he represented UA in the same race last year.
Bordes and his harrier teammates will take this week off before they travel to Joplin, Mo., for the Missouri Southern Invitational on Sept. 18.
