FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas golfer Matt Bortis was named second-team All-SEC Tuesday after an outstanding sophomore season for the Razorbacks.
The Springfield, Mo., native captured medalist honors at the NIT Invitational earlier this season for his first career victory. He leads the Hogs in scoring average at 72.8 and ranks 10th in the SEC.
“Matt had a solid year for us this season,” Arkansas Head Coach Mike Ketcham said. “It is a wonderful honor for Matt, and I am glad to see him recognized for the hard work he has done this season.”
Bortis was the Razorbacks top finisher at Notre Dame Invitational, Tucker Invitational, Hall of Fame Invitational and the NIT Invitational. He also finished in the top 15 at four events this season and in the top 10 twice.
Bortis finished tied for 18th at the SEC Championships two weeks ago after firing a 224. He was named the SEC Golfer of the Week on March 30 after shooting a 12-under-par 204 to win the NIT Invitational in Tucson, Ariz.
“Making the All-SEC team was one of the goals Matt set at the beginning of the year.” Ketcham said. “Now that he has achieved it, hopefully it will jump start his play the rest of the year.”
Bortis and the Razorbacks begin regional play on May 19-21. Regionals fields and sites will be announced on May 9.
Kentucky’s Brian Craig was named the SEC Coach of the Year, while the Wildcats John Holmes was named the Golfer of the Year. South Carolina’s West Streib was named the Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Mark Anderson was the Freshman of the Year.
