Boyce, Brannon Carry Razorbacks To 5-1 Victory

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas pitchers Clint Brannon and Charley Boyce combined to hold Eastern Illinois to one run on three hits through seven innings as the Razorbacks posted a 5-1 victory over the Panthers Friday afternoon at Baum Stadium.
Arkansas moved to 2-0 on the season, while Eastern Illinois fell to 0-1 in their first action of the year.
Brannon started on the mound for the Razorbacks and pitched four solid innings before giving way to Boyce. Brannon gave up two hits on the day, one a solo home run to Kirk Walters that gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead in the second inning.
Boyce held Eastern Illinois to one hit, a single in the fourth, and fanned four in earning his first career victory.
The Razorbacks took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning on a two-run single by Kirk McConnell. Haas Pratt (single) and Andrew Wishy (single) each scored on the play.
Arkansas added three runs in the seventh. After retiring the leadoff hitter, EIU pitcher Kirk Miller walked three consecutive batters to load the bases. Pratt singled through the right side to plate Scott Hode to push the lead to 3-1.
Wishy then singled through the left side to bring in Chris Williams and Scott Bridges to make it a 5-1 Razorback lead.
Caton Hall was brought in to finish the eighth and ninth innings as Arkansas claimed its eighth straight win over Eastern Illinois. Hall struck out one and gave up one hit in two innings of work.
The two teams continue their series with a 1 p.m. game Saturday at Baum Stadium.
