FAYETTEVILLE – Legendary former head football coach and athletic director Frank Broyles will serve as the University of Arkansas’ honorary captain for the Southwest Classic this Saturday at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Broyles will be recognized on the field before Arkansas takes on Texas A&M at 11 a.m. CT in a game nationally televised by ESPN.Broyles has served the University of Arkansas and Razorback Athletics for more than half a century. He was Arkansas’ head football coach from 1958-76 winning 144 games and leading the Razorbacks to 10 bowl games and seven Southwest Conference championships.
Broyles was a six-time Southwest Conference Coach of the Year and was named the American Football Coaches Association National Coach of the Year in 1964 after leading Arkansas to an undefeated 11-0 season and the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) national championship. He is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame and the University of Arkansas Sports Hall of Honor.Broyles also served as athletic director at the University of Arkansas from 1973-2007.
